I found these numbers while looking up info for another thread.

Student to Teacher Ratios.

Student to teacher ratio for Pound High School, student population 264 - 16:1

Student to teacher ratio for:
Abingdon High School, student population 1008 - 15:1
Charlottesville High: 1350 students. 14:1
Blacksburg High school: 1200 students. 13:1
Gretna High School: 707 students. 13:1
Lebanon High School: 710 Students. 15:1
Marion High School: 780 Students. 12:1

And there are other examples - these are just a few for you to chew on.

I thought student to teacher ration was an anti-consolidation argument.

Student to teacher ratio is a reason why most of the folks wanting to close the smaller schools do so. Guess you just made that arguement obselete for me. What I've said ? all along. Basham got this closure arugement started by saying folks would flee the cities after 9/11 and we must build additional classrooms and then ,less than 6 months later Wise didn't have a single million dollars for an operating budget (from spending 54 million)and needed to close just Appy to save. Still purchasing "portable classrooms" to house the exrta students for the moment. At least that is my memory of the happenings, something along that line. Probably a couple of years lapsed from the 9/11 "we should close and build" to the "close Appy and save 1 mill" .

The thing is all those schools you listed have over 700 students non of the schools, if consolidated, would have ne where close to those numbers, except for Wise and Pound. All other schools would be somewhere around 650 or so. And a 13:1 student teacher ratio is a better ratio than 16:1.

My last post on this forum. I hope some will actually take the time to read some of the information listed here.
Some will jump quickly to jokes and how wrong it is. Esp. those with multiply nicknames.
But to those who read it. It hits home. And it brings what we talk about in education to a reality check. Like some say. It's about education and community.

On the search engine just type in small schools. It will do the search for you. Most of the topics are from 03-05. You can do an up dated search also.

Also, those from Appy, Pound and St. Paul.
The Gates foundation does offer assistance. I may of read wrong. But i think some of their financial assistance is free. Some thing you may want to check into.
Since this issue is such a problem and it's only based on giving the kids the best education.
You may contact the foundation with the problems of this area and they may help out or lead you in a direction to get help.
Who knows they may pay for Appy, Pound and St. Paul to be renovated and let the county foot the bill for Kelly, PV and Coeburn.
A win win for the county and a resolve to the issue.
Just some thing to look at and a source that maybe can lead some into the right direction finanacially. Maybe even the county should they really want to resolve this issue.
